Sun Valley High School Theater Earns Regional Recognition

The Sun Valley High School Theater Department continues to earn accolades for its outstanding work, receiving honors from two of the region’s most prestigious high school theater programs: the Greater Philadelphia Cappies and the Philadelphia Independence Awards.

This year’s production of The Spongebob Musical earned six Cappies nominations:

  • Lead Actress in a Musical - Amaya Howard
  • Comic Actor in a Musical - Jonathan Michael
  • Supporting Actor in a Musical - Gabe Palmarini
  • Creativity - Amos Fayehun (Foley Artist)
  • Props - Sun Valley Props Team
  • Musical - The Spongebob Musical

The production also received five Philadelphia Independence Award nominations:

  • Lead Actress - Amaya Howard
  • Lead Actor - Jonathan Michael
  • Female Vocalist - Amaya Howard
  • Scenic Design - Sun Valley Props Team
  • Theater Educator - Elizabeth Hazlett

The Cappies program celebrates student achievement in theater and journalism, with student critics reviewing performances across the region. The Philadelphia Independence Awards are adjudicated by a panel of theater professionals and educators who recognize excellence in high school productions.

Director Elizabeth Hazlett reflected on the recognition:

“While awards are not the reason we do this...to be so consistently and repeatedly recognized for excellence in theater arts is something that our students and creative team is exceedingly proud of, and we hope that our greater school community can share that joy and pride with us.”

Award results will be announced on May 20 for the Philadelphia Independence Awards and June 1 for the Cappies.

Sun Valley is proud to be recognized alongside many of the region’s most talented programs and congratulates the entire cast, crew, and production team for their outstanding work in bringing The Spongebob Musical to life.
